Habitation Saint-Jean (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation Saint-Jean was a significant colonial plantation in northern Haiti that flourished during French rule in the 18th century. It specialized primarily in sugarcane cultivation and represented the industrial scale of the Caribbean slave economy at the time. The estate included extensive fields, a sugar mill, as well as residential buildings for overseers and slave quarters. During the Haitian Revolution at the end of the 18th century, the site became a scene of fierce fighting and was partially destroyed. Today, the ruins serve as archaeological evidence of the socio-economic structure of colonial Saint-Domingue. The remains of the walls and irrigation channels illustrate the advanced technical methods used at the time to maximize yields and manage the large-scale production.
