Citadelle Laferrière
Citadelle Laferrière is a massive mountaintop fortress located in northern Haiti, approximately 27 kilometers south of Cap-Haïtien. It was built between 1805 and 1820 by order of Henri Christophe, a key leader of the Haitian Revolution who later became King Henri I. Perched on the summit of Bonnet à l’Évêque at an altitude of 900 meters, the fortress was designed to defend the newly independent nation from a potential French reinvasion. It is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982. The structure is famous for its towering stone walls and an extensive collection of hundreds of bronze cannons and thousands of cannonballs. As a primary national symbol of Haiti, it represents the power and determination of the first black republic to maintain its freedom against all odds. Visitors reach the summit via a steep trail, rewarded with panoramic views stretching to the horizon.
