Laguna Chichoj is situated in the heart of the Alta Verapaz department, directly adjacent to the town of San Cristóbal Verapaz. This small but ecologically significant lake is noted for its floating islands of vegetation, which were once a defining characteristic of its waters. Surrounded by rolling hills and pine forests, the lake plays a major role in the local mythology and history of the Poqomchi' Maya people. In the past, the lagoon was an important site for religious ceremonies and served as a primary water source for the community. In recent decades, however, Laguna Chichoj has faced substantial environmental challenges, including eutrophication from wastewater and the proliferation of invasive aquatic species like water hyacinth. Local organizations and the government are increasingly focused on the lake's restoration to safeguard its function as a habitat for migratory birds and native fish. Despite these ecological issues, the lake remains a peaceful spot for walks and gives a glimpse into traditional life within the Guatemalan highlands.
