Dresden Zwinger (Germany)

Weather…

The Dresden Zwinger is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in Germany and a symbol of Saxony's cultural peak under Elector Augustus the Strong. Constructed between 1710 and 1728 based on designs by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the site originally served as an orangery and a festival ground for the court. The complex is noted for its harmonious blend of architecture and sculpture, with the Crown Gate, the Wall Pavilion, and the Nymphenbad (Nymphs' Bath) being artistic highlights. In the 19th century, Gottfried Semper added the Semper Gallery in the Neo-Renaissance style to the ensemble. During the air raids in February 1945, the Zwinger was almost completely destroyed, but it was faithfully restored over decades of work until 1963. Today, it houses world-renowned museums such as the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Porcelain Collection. The Zwinger remains a central attraction for international tourists and a testament to Baroque grandeur.
