Pirna proudly bears the title "Gateway to Saxon Switzerland" and enchants visitors with one of the most beautiful historic town centers in Saxony. The magnificent burgher houses, featuring richly decorated gables and elegant oriel windows, bear witness to the wealth of former trading days along the Elbe River. A must-see is the market square, which was immortalized by the famous painter Canaletto; the architectural ensemble still looks almost exactly as it did in the 18th century. Towering majestically above the old town is Sonnenstein Castle, a former fortress with a checkered history, offering fantastic panoramic views of the Elbe valley from its terraced gardens. The late Gothic St. Mary's Church impresses with its filigree net vaulting and precious historic frescoes. Pirna serves as the first-rate base camp for excursions into the bizarre rock formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, whether traveling by historic paddle steamer, cycling along the Elbe Cycle Route, or setting out on foot to conquer the peaks.
