The Transparent Factory (Gläserne Manufaktur) in Dresden is a globally unique Volkswagen production site, distinguished by its extraordinary architecture and visible manufacturing processes. Opened in 2002 on the edge of the Großer Garten park, the facility was originally designed for the production of the Phaeton luxury sedan, aiming to showcase the integration of industrial production and urban life. The building's facade features over 27,500 square meters of glass, allowing visitors to witness modern assembly lines while employees work on parquet floors in clean-room conditions. A technical highlight is the CarGoTram, a freight tram system that transports components through Dresden's city center without emissions. Following the end of Phaeton production, the site transitioned to electric vehicles, including the e-Golf and later the ID.3. Today, the factory serves not only as a manufacturing plant but also as an experience center and innovation hub for electromobility and autonomous driving within the VW Group.
