Dresden is the capital of Saxony and is often referred to as Florence on the Elbe due to its Baroque splendor and its setting on the river. The city experienced a cultural golden age under Elector Augustus the Strong, leading to the creation of architectural masterpieces like the Zwinger and the Frauenkirche. The latter, famously destroyed during World War II, was reconstructed between 1994 and 2005 and now serves as a global symbol of peace. Dresden is home to the State Art Collections, which include some of the world's most significant museums, such as the Green Vault and its unique treasures. Beyond its historic core, Dresden is now a leading center for high technology, particularly in microelectronics, earning the region the nickname Silicon Saxony. The Semperoper represents the city's rich musical tradition, closely associated with composers like Wagner and Strauss. The blend of Baroque architecture, river landscapes, and modern industry makes Dresden one of the most dynamic cities in Eastern Germany. In September 2024 part of Dresden's historic Carola Bridge collapsed into the Elbe, causing months of traffic disruption. In Saxony's simultaneous state election the CDU lost ground heavily to the AfD and the new BSW party.
