Zwickau is a major city in southwestern Saxony, primarily recognized as the birthplace of the German automotive industry and the world-renowned composer Robert Schumann. The city has over 900 years of history, which was significantly shaped by coal mining and industrialization. In 1904, August Horch established his automobile works here, eventually leading to the creation of the Audi brand and, during the GDR era, the production of the iconic Trabant. The August Horch Museum impressively documents this technological progression within historic factory buildings. Culturally, the Robert Schumann House takes center stage, dedicated to the life and works of the influential Romantic composer. The historic city center features architectural gems such as St. Mary's Cathedral and the Gewandhaus, reflecting the former prosperity of the cloth-making guild. Today, Zwickau remains a dynamic industrial hub, now leading the shift toward electromobility at its large-scale Volkswagen manufacturing plant.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
