On the last weekend of June, Freiberg celebrates its mining town festival with over 100,000 visitors, the highlight being the grand miners' parade on Sunday.
The Saxon mining town of Freiberg is situated on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains and has over 850 years of mining history. Following the discovery of rich silver deposits around 1168, the settlement rapidly evolved into the region's economic hub and was granted town privileges in 1186. Freiberg is internationally renowned for its Mining Academy, established in 1765, which is the world's oldest university of mining and metallurgy still in operation. The architectural landscape of the old town is defined by St. Mary's Cathedral, which houses significant artworks such as the Golden Gate and two organs built by Gottfried Silbermann. Since 2019, the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Ore Mountains Mining Region. Beyond its historical status as a silver city, Freiberg serves today as a modern technological center for semiconductor manufacturing and solar energy. The medieval layout of the town center remains remarkably well-preserved with its grand merchant houses.
