Meissen, picturesquely situated on the Elbe in Saxony, is known worldwide as the cradle of European porcelain. On the orders of Augustus the Strong, Europe's first porcelain manufactory was founded here in 1710 after Johann Friedrich Böttger deciphered the secret of its production. The city's landmark is the ensemble of Meissen Cathedral and Albrechtsburg Castle, majestically perched on the castle hill. Albrechtsburg, built in the 15th century under the House of Wettin, is considered the first castle building in German architectural history and housed porcelain production until 1863. The historic old town impresses with its winding alleys, Renaissance townhouses, and the late Gothic town hall on the market square. Meissen is also the center of an important wine-growing region in Saxony, famous for its steep vineyards along the Elbe. Each year, the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory and numerous wine festivals attract visitors from all over the world to experience craftsmanship and regional cuisine.
