Neuwied, located on the right bank of the Rhine, was founded in the 17th century with a distinct privilege: religious tolerance. This forward-thinking policy attracted various denominations, including the Moravian Church, whose influence is still visible in the grid-like layout of the center. The residential palace of the Princes of Wied, situated directly on the riverfront, features an expansive park that provides a green oasis in the urban core. The massive Rhine dike, constructed for flood protection, doubles as a popular promenade offering excellent views of the passing river traffic. Inside the town, the Roentgen Museum showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Abraham and David Roentgen, 18th-century cabinetmakers who supplied luxury furniture to European royal courts. Nearby, the former Premonstratensian abbey of Rommersdorf displays well-preserved Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Neuwied also serves as a gateway to the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park, where numerous hiking trails wind through forested hills. The local zoo in the Heimbach-Weis district focuses heavily on species conservation and holds the largest troop of Eastern grey kangaroos outside of Australia.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
