💡 Tips

  • The Jewish Cemetery 'Heiliger Sand' is Europe's oldest surviving one; male visitors must wear a head covering (available to borrow at the entrance).

  • The Nibelung Museum is integrated directly into the old city wall; be prepared for many stairs during your visit.
  • Parking right next to the cathedral can be difficult; it's better to use the large parking garages near the Rhine promenade.

Worms is one of Germany's oldest cities, boasting a history of over 2,000 years that began as a Celtic settlement in pre-Roman times. The city on the Rhine is world-famous as the setting for the Nibelungenlied and as the site of the Diet of Worms in 1521, where Martin Luther defended his teachings. The Romanesque Cathedral of St. Peter, completed in the 12th century, is one of the three Rhenish Imperial Cathedrals alongside those in Speyer and Mainz. In the Middle Ages, Worms was a center of Jewish scholarship and, together with Mainz and Speyer, forms the so-called ShUM cities, which are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Besides its historical significance, Worms is an important center for viticulture, particularly known for Liebfraumilch wine. Today, the city combines its rich medieval tradition with modern industry and culture, reflected in the annual Nibelungen Festival. Its location directly on the Rhine also makes the city a significant logistics hub in the Rhine-Neckar region.
