Situated on the left bank of the Rhine, Andernach is one of the oldest towns in Germany, tracing its origins back to a Roman fort established in the 1st century BC. The town's historical prominence is evident in the Alter Krahnen, a massive 16th-century stone crane standing directly on the riverbank, and the 56-meter-high Runder Turm, a defensive tower dating back to 1453 that survived a deliberate explosion attempt by French troops in 1689. Beyond its ancient architecture, Andernach is most famous for the Geysir Andernach, the highest cold-water geyser in the world. Visitors begin their geyser experience at the interactive discovery center in the town, followed by a short boat trip across the Rhine to the Namedyer Werth nature reserve, where the geyser reliably erupts up to 60 meters high every two hours. The town is also known for its Edible City initiative, allowing anyone to freely harvest fruits, vegetables, and herbs planted in public spaces around the moat. Walking along the expansive Rhine promenade provides clear views of the busy river traffic and the wooded hills of the Westerwald region on the opposite shore.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
