Deutsches Eck (Germany)

Weather…

The Deutsches Eck (German Corner) in Koblenz is an artificially created headland at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and one of Germany's most famous national monuments. The site earned its name as early as 1216 when the Teutonic Order settled at this strategically important location. In 1897, a monumental equestrian statue of Emperor William I was erected here to commemorate the 1871 unification of the German Empire. The monument was severely damaged during World War II, and the equestrian statue was ultimately destroyed; a reconstruction was not placed back on the pedestal until 1993 following German reunification. Today, the Deutsches Eck is a central part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Upper Middle Rhine Valley and attracts millions of visitors annually. From the tip of the headland, visitors enjoy an impressive view of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the heavy river traffic on both waterways. The site symbolizes both German history and the cultural significance of the Rhine-Moselle region.
