Ludwigshafen am Rhein is the second-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate after Mainz and is globally recognized as the headquarters of BASF. The city has a relatively young history; it emerged in the 19th century from a former Rhine fortification and was officially named after King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1843. Following the establishment of the Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik (BASF) in 1865, Ludwigshafen rapidly developed into a major industrial hub. During World War II, the city was heavily destroyed due to its strategic industrial significance and was rebuilt in a modern style during the post-war era. Today, Ludwigshafen houses the world's largest contiguous chemical site, which shapes the economic structure of the entire region. Beyond industry, the city provides cultural highlights such as the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, famous for its striking Miró Wall. Located directly across the Rhine from Mannheim, it serves as a crucial transport hub with one of the country's most significant inland ports.
