Positioned on the western edge of the Palatinate Forest, Pirmasens is a city whose history is firmly rooted in the shoe manufacturing industry. Once celebrated as the shoe metropolis of Germany, the cityscape is still defined by large industrial brick buildings, many of which have been thoughtfully repurposed for modern use. The most prominent example is the Dynamikum, an interactive science center housed in the former Rheinberger shoe factory. Focusing on the physics of movement, it features engaging, hands-on exhibits that draw families from across the region. The Forum ALTE POST serves as another cultural hub, hosting art exhibitions and historical collections. In the 18th century, Landgrave Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt expanded Pirmasens into a garrison town, leaving behind the expansive Exerzierplatz parade ground that still anchors the city center. Just outside the urban area, the vast Palatinate Forest Nature Park awaits outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding Southwest Palatinate region is famous for its striking red sandstone rock formations, providing a scenic playground for hikers and mountain bikers, complete with traditional woodland cabins.
