San Salvador Cathedral (El Salvador)

Weather…

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Savior in San Salvador serves as the religious heart of the nation and a symbol of El Salvador's turbulent history. The current structure was consecrated in 1999, replacing two previous cathedrals that were destroyed by earthquakes and fire. Its architecture blends Romanesque elements with eclectic influences, distinguished by its bright facade. The cathedral's crypt houses the tomb of Saint Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass and is now revered as a global symbol of nonviolent resistance. The cathedral has been the stage for numerous critical political and religious events, including the tragic stampede during Romero's funeral. Previously, the facade was adorned with colorful mosaics by artist Fernando Llort, which were controversially removed in 2011. Today, the interior features a simplified design and can accommodate over 3,000 worshippers during major religious ceremonies.
