Zapata Swamp (Cuba)

Weather…

The Zapata Swamp, or Ciénaga de Zapata, is the largest and most pristine wetland ecosystem in the entire Caribbean region. Located in the Matanzas Province of southern Cuba, this biosphere reserve spans an area of more than 4,000 square kilometers. The landscape is a complex mosaic of mangrove forests, sawgrass marshes, lagoons, and coral reefs, hosting an extraordinary level of biodiversity. It is most famous for being the primary habitat of the Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer), an endemic species found only in this region. Over 170 species of birds, including the bee hummingbird, the world's smallest bird, inhabit this protected area throughout the year. Historically, the swamp gained international significance in 1961 as the site of the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) invasion. Today, the Ciénaga de Zapata is a premier destination for ecotourism and birdwatching, focused on preserving its delicate ecological balance while supporting sustainable local communities.
