Topes de Collantes (Cuba)

Weather…

Topes de Collantes is a protected natural landscape and nature reserve located in the Escambray Mountain range in central Cuba. Situated at an average altitude of 800 meters above sea level, the area is characterized by a unique microclimate that differs significantly from the tropical heat of the surrounding lowlands. The region gained architectural prominence in the 1930s when a massive sanatorium was constructed under the orders of Fulgencio Batista. The park is renowned for its dense forests of pine, eucalyptus, and giant ferns, as well as spectacular hydrological features like the 64-meter high Salto del Caburní waterfall. Historically, the rugged terrain provided a strategic refuge for independence fighters and later for counter-revolutionary groups in the 20th century. Today, it serves as a primary destination for ecotourism and high-quality coffee production, providing a habitat for numerous endemic species such as the Cuban trogon.
