Cuchillas del Toa is a mountain range in eastern Cuba that forms the core of the UNESCO-recognized Biosphere Reserve of the same name. This region is considered the most important center of biodiversity in the Caribbean and is characterized by a highly rugged relief with narrow ridges and deep valleys. It is the most humid area in Cuba, leading to the formation of numerous rivers, including the Toa River, the island's most voluminous waterway. The vegetation is a mix of tropical rainforest and mountain forests that harbor an enormous number of endemic species, such as the rare Ivory-billed Woodpecker and the colorful Polymita snails. Geologically, the area is complex, with a high proportion of serpentinite rocks that create unique ecological niches. The region plays a decisive role in Cuba's environmental protection and the preservation of its genetic diversity. Human settlements are sparse and focus on sustainable practices like cocoa and coconut cultivation.

This rich biosphere reserve in far eastern Cuba is most commonly approached from either Baracoa or Guantánamo. Access to the interior forest areas is almost exclusively via unpaved dirt tracks and river valleys.

Best season

The dry season between December and April is the absolute best choice for safely admiring the immense biodiversity. Heavy rains throughout the rest of the year make many access routes deep into the mountains impassable.

Expect a truly wild, untouched landscape featuring steep slopes, dense rainforests, and numerous intricate waterways. The paths are quite rudimentary and often highly difficult to pass due to erosion or dense vegetation.

High-quality, waterproof hiking boots and robust outdoor clothing are strictly mandatory for this harsh jungle terrain. A first aid kit, strong insect repellent, and ample supplies of water and snacks must be brought along.

The very last paved parking facilities usually end completely in the small villages on the edge of the protected area. Anyone driving deeper into the mountains must rely on 4x4 vehicles and improvised parking spots.
