Caimanera is a unique port city in the Guantánamo province of southeastern Cuba, situated directly on the shores of Guantánamo Bay. Its geographic position is extraordinary as it borders the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, making it one of the most politically sensitive locations in the country. Founded in 1822, the town initially developed as a key shipping point for coffee and sugar produced in the surrounding highlands. Today, Caimanera is primarily known for its salt production; the local salt pans are among the most significant in Cuba, defining the landscape with their striking white mounds. Due to its proximity to the military base, access to the town is restricted for visitors, resulting in a quiet and secluded atmosphere. The urban architecture is characterized by Caribbean-style wooden buildings that lend the town a distinct charm. Despite the geopolitical tensions, the residents, known as "Caimanerenses," maintain a robust cultural identity deeply connected to the sea and fishing.
