The community was originally founded by Maroons (escaped slaves), giving it a deeply rooted Afro-Caribbean identity and a proud Kriol heritage. The village is nationally renowned for preserving the Sambai drumming tradition, an ancestral form of music and dance often performed during full moons and community festivals. Geographically, the area is a vital conservation zone, as the lagoon serves as one of the most important habitats for the West Indian Manatee in Central America. Residents traditionally rely on fishing and, more recently, on sustainable ecotourism, offering guided tours to see manatees and birdlife. Gales Point provides visitors with a rustic and authentic experience far removed from mainstream tourism, defined by the genuine hospitality of its people.
