Caye Caulker Village is the sole settlement on the limestone coral island of the same name, situated approximately 20 miles northeast of Belize City. The island's recorded history began in the mid-19th century when Spanish refugees fleeing the Caste War of Yucatán established a permanent community alongside British loggers. A major geographical transformation occurred in 1961 during Hurricane Hattie, which breached the island and created the waterway now famously known as The Split. For decades, the local economy was centered on the Caribbean spiny lobster industry before transitioning into a world-renowned destination for budget travelers and divers. The island's governing body enforces a relaxed development pace, encapsulated in the Go Slow motto, which limits motor vehicle traffic to golf carts and bicycles. While the southern portion of the island contains the village infrastructure, the northern half is designated as a forest reserve to protect indigenous flora and fauna. Its proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef ensures that the village remains a critical site for marine conservation and ecological research.
