Swallow Caye Manatee Reserve (Belize)

Weather…

The Swallow Caye Manatee Reserve was officially established in 2002 for the protection of the West Indian Manatee. Its founding is largely due to the tireless efforts of Lionel 'Chocolate' Heredia, who campaigned for decades to protect these gentle giants. The reserve is located approximately seven miles east of Belize City and encompasses vital seagrass beds that serve as the primary food source for the manatees. Strict regulations apply in this area: motorboats must cut their engines and use poles to navigate, preventing propeller injuries to the animals. The Swallow Caye region is one of the best locations in Central America to observe manatees in their natural habitat without disturbing them. In addition to manatees, the ecosystem supports various fish species and is an important part of Belize's marine network. The protected status contributes significantly to preserving biodiversity and promoting responsible ecotourism.
