The Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve is located at the northern tip of Ambergris Caye and extends across the border into Mexico. The area was declared a protected area in 1996 and is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is unique in that it protects both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The terrestrial part consists of mangrove forests, coastal forests, and savannas, and is an important habitat for wildcats such as the puma. The marine part protects a section of the barrier reef, seagrass beds, and the rocky and coral coastline. The eponymous 'Bacalar Chico' channel is a narrow waterway dug by the Maya, connecting Chetumal Bay to the Caribbean Sea. The area is remote and best accessed by boat from San Pedro, which helps to preserve its pristine beauty.

Getting there
This remote marine reserve is typically reached by taking a boat ride from nearby coastal settlements. The journey over the water takes you directly to the interface between the barrier reef and the peninsula.
Best season
The drier months of the year offer the most favorable sea conditions and superior underwater visibility for snorkeling. Traveling during the rainy season might involve choppy boat rides and reduced water clarity.
Terrain & paths
The terrain spans from colorful, submerged coral reef formations to thick mangrove forests and coastal scrub. On land, the few available paths are rugged and sandy, often weaving through dense coastal vegetation.
What to bring
High-quality snorkeling gear and ocean-safe sunscreen are absolute necessities for exploring the marine reserve. If exploring the landward park, bring sturdy walking shoes and plenty of drinking water.
Parking
As access is primarily water-based, standard vehicle parking is irrelevant at the park itself. You will generally leave your vehicle or golf cart at the marina or harbor in your departure town before boarding.
Safety
Respect the delicate coral reef environment by never touching or stepping on the formations while swimming. Always heed the advice of boat captains regarding sea conditions, currents, and sudden weather changes.
Time needed
A guided boat trip to the area, including time spent snorkeling in the marine reserve and visiting the mainland, usually consumes a full day. The transit time across the water is a significant part of the journey.
