Half Moon Caye is a crescent-shaped island at the southeastern corner of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, about 80 kilometers from Belize City. The island is a national monument and a protected area, known for two main attractions: its bird colony and its exceptional dive sites. The western half of the island is a forest reserve that is home to a thriving colony of red-footed boobies, one of the few in the Western Caribbean. An observation tower allows visitors to watch the nesting birds. The eastern half of the island consists of palm-fringed sandy beaches. The surrounding waters are part of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll and offer some of the best diving in Belize, including the famous 'Half Moon Caye Wall,' a steep underwater cliff rich in marine life. The island is a well-suited example of the natural beauty and diversity of Belize's atolls.

Getting there

This remote natural monument is accessible exclusively by boat, typically via organized dive or snorkel tours departing from mainland hubs or larger islands. The journey crosses open ocean waters and can take several hours, depending on the starting point and sea conditions.

The most favorable sea conditions for the boat crossing and underwater visibility are generally found between February and May. While the island is beautiful year-round, tropical storms or high winds during the hurricane season can cause sudden tour cancellations.

The island features soft coral sand beaches, a dense interior forest of trees, and an observation tower offering views of the bird canopy. The surrounding marine environment consists of animated, shallow coral reefs that abruptly drop off into the deep oceanic waters.

High-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, a wide hat, and polarized sunglasses are absolute necessities against the intense Caribbean sun. Snorkeling or diving gear is usually provided, but bringing a reliable underwater camera and light walking shoes for the island trail is highly recommended.

Sunstroke and dehydration are common risks, making constant water intake and shade-seeking vital during the midday heat. While swimming and snorkeling, visitors must be mindful of strong oceanic currents and avoid touching the fragile, protected coral reef structures.
