Sarteneja is the largest fishing village in Belize, located in the Corozal District on the northern coast of the country. Its name is derived from the Maya word Tzaten-a-ha, meaning water between the rocks, referring to the natural wells found in the limestone coastline. The area's history dates back to the Classic Maya period when it functioned as a significant trading hub for obsidian and jade. The modern settlement was established in the mid-19th century by refugees fleeing the Caste War of Yucatán, who introduced their specialized shipbuilding traditions to the region. Sarteneja is famous for its artisanal wooden fishing boats, which are still constructed by hand and used to navigate the Bay of Corozal. Geographically, the village is situated at the edge of the Shipstern Conservation & Management Area, an 8,000-hectare nature reserve. The local economy is primarily driven by lobster and conch fishing, though sustainable practices are increasingly emphasized. Despite its remote location, Sarteneja has developed into a destination for nature tourism, particularly for manatee watching and exploring the unique dry tropical forests.
