Nukulaelae Islets

The Nukulaelae Islets form a scenic coral atoll in southeastern Tuvalu, consisting of about 15 individual motus that enclose a shallow, oval lagoon. Geographically, the atoll is characterized by its narrow reef structure, with most landmass concentrated on the eastern side. Historically, Nukulaelae is of great significance as it was the first place in Tuvalu where Christian missionaries from the London Missionary Society arrived in 1861, lasting transforming the nation's culture. The islets are surrounded by pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters hosting a rich marine fauna, including green sea turtles that nest here. The islands' vegetation primarily consists of coconut palms and native tree species like Pisonia grandis, providing essential nesting sites for seabirds. Due to its remote location, Nukulaelae has preserved a traditional lifestyle heavily reliant on subsistence farming and fishing. Scientists today primarily study the atoll in the context of coastal dynamics and the impacts of cyclones on low-lying coral islands in the Pacific.
