Fangaua is the sole village on Nukulaelae Atoll, the southeasternmost inhabited atoll of Tuvalu. It is situated on the islet of Fangaua on the western fringe of the atoll. Due to Nukulaelae's remote location, the community in Fangaua has maintained one of the most authentic traditional cultures in Tuvalu, where the social system governed by the Falekaupule remains very active. The local economy is based almost entirely on subsistence fishing and the cultivation of staples like coconut and pulaka. Fangaua holds a special place in Tuvaluan history as the site where the first Christian missionary landed in 1861, beginning a significant cultural shift in the islands. The village landscape is defined by the church and the large community meeting house. Rising sea levels present existential challenges for Fangaua, leading residents to become leaders in coastal protection and environmental adaptation efforts. Despite its small population, the village supports its own primary school and a medical clinic.
