Nukulaelae Atoll (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Nukulaelae is the southernmost atoll of Tuvalu, distinguished by its exceptional natural beauty and historical significance. The atoll comprises 19 islets surrounding a closed lagoon, which, unlike Nukufetau, has no navigable entrance for large vessels. Historically, Nukulaelae is deeply intertwined with the arrival of Christianity in Tuvalu, as the missionary Elekana landed here in 1861 after drifting at sea for several weeks. During the mid-19th century, the atoll suffered severely from 'blackbirding' raids, where Peruvian slave traders abducted nearly two-thirds of the population. Today, residents live almost exclusively on the islet of Fangaua and maintain a strong tradition of communal sharing. Agriculture is challenging due to the narrow land strips, but coconut cultivation and lagoon fishing sustain the population. Nukulaelae is also recognized as a place where traditional Polynesian navigation skills are still taught and practiced.
