Funafala Islet

Funafala is a historically and ecologically significant islet in the southern part of the Funafuti Atoll. Before modern urbanization and infrastructure development were concentrated on Fongafale, Funafala was the second most important inhabited islet of the atoll. Geographically, the motu is characterized by its elongated shape and dense coconut groves covering most of the land area. The islet has largely preserved its traditional character, as it remains disconnected from the main power grid, and inhabitants rely primarily on subsistence farming and fishing. Ecologically, Funafala is important for maintaining traditional cultivation methods of pulaka (swamp taro), with the island's surface featuring numerous natural depressions. The beaches of Funafala are a vital habitat for crustaceans and serve as a buffer zone for the atoll's southern reef system. Historical accounts state that Funafala was a place of refuge during World War II when residents fled the bombings of Fongafale. Today, the islet stands in marked contrast to modern life in the capital and is the subject of sustainable island development projects.
