Caroni Plain

The Caroni Plain is an extensive alluvial lowland situated in the central portion of Trinidad, stretching between the Northern Range and the Central Range mountains. Geologically, the plain is characterized by Pleistocene and Holocene sediments deposited over millennia by the Caroni River and its various tributaries. During the colonial era, this fertile region served as the island's primary economic engine, dominated by vast sugar cane estates that were largely cultivated by East Indian indentured laborers starting in 1845. Today, the landscape has shifted significantly, with former agricultural lands giving way to industrial developments and sprawling residential communities along the East-West Corridor. Despite this urbanization, the plain remains a critical component of the island's hydrology, serving as a natural drainage basin for runoff from the surrounding uplands. It is also home to the Centeno Central Experiment Station, which continues to be a focal point for national agricultural research and development.
