Caroni Bird Sanctuary (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Caroni Bird Sanctuary is an expansive mangrove swamp located on the western coast of Trinidad, covering approximately 12,000 hectares of protected wetlands. It is globally renowned as the primary roosting site for the Scarlet Ibis, Trinidad's national bird, whose brilliant red plumage creates a spectacular visual display at sunset. The sanctuary comprises a complex network of waterways, lagoons, and mudflats accessible only by boat. In addition to the Scarlet Ibis, the swamp supports over 180 bird species, as well as caimans, silky anteaters, and various reptiles like the Cook's tree boa. The ecological significance of the Caroni Swamp lies in its role as a coastal water filter and a vital nursery for numerous marine organisms. A portion of the area has been officially protected since 1953 to safeguard local wildlife from poaching and habitat degradation. Guided boat tours navigate through the narrow canals, offering visitors close-up views of the delicate flora and fauna. It remains one of the Caribbean's premier ecotourism destinations.
