Spanish Garrison (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Spanish Garrison at San José de Oruña, now modern-day St. Joseph, marks the location of Trinidad's first capital established under Spanish rule. Founded in 1592 by Antonio de Berrío, the settlement was strategically placed inland on a hill to provide a better defensive position against the frequent pirate raids and privateer attacks common in the Caribbean. The garrison was a witness to major historical conflicts, most notably the 1595 raid by Sir Walter Raleigh, who burned the town and captured the governor during his quest for El Dorado. For over 160 years, this site remained the administrative and military hub of the colony until the capital was relocated to Port of Spain in 1757. Today, while few original 16th-century structures remain, the site is commemorated as a national heritage landmark. It serves as a reminder of the long Spanish period which laid the foundations for Trinidad's legal system, land distribution, and numerous place names.
