Point Fortin Oil Complex
Point Fortin is a historic center of the petroleum industry in southern Trinidad, which has evolved in recent decades into a global hub for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The centerpiece of the region is the massive Atlantic LNG complex, one of the world's largest facilities for the liquefaction of natural gas. Commencing operations in 1999, this facility marked a pivotal shift in Trinidad and Tobago's economy, establishing the nation as a leading global exporter of LNG. The industrial site features four production units, known as 'trains,' and dedicated berthing facilities for specialized LNG tankers. Point Fortin's industrial legacy spans over a century, beginning with the early oil explorations and the establishment of United British Oilfields of Trinidad (UBOT). The city's landscape and social fabric are deeply intertwined with energy production, as a significant portion of the local workforce is employed in the sector. While LNG is now dominant, the area still maintains vital oil refining and storage infrastructure. Point Fortin stands as a prime example of successful industrial transformation from oil to natural gas. Due to the high-risk nature of gas processing, the facility adheres to the most stringent international safety and environmental protocols.
