Fyzabad is a historically significant town in southwestern Trinidad, fundamentally linked to the country's labor movement. Established in 1871 by Presbyterian missionaries, it was originally settled by indentured Indian laborers who had completed their contracts on the estates. The name is derived from the city of Faizabad in India. In the early 20th century, the discovery of crude oil transformed Fyzabad into a vital industrial hub. The town is most famous as the cradle of modern trade unionism in Trinidad and Tobago. It was the epicenter of the 1937 labor riots led by Tubal Uriah 'Buzz' Butler, which sparked radical political and social reforms across the nation. Every June 19th, on Labour Day, Fyzabad hosts national celebrations to commemorate these historic events. The town's layout and buildings reflect its industrial heritage and the religious diversity established by its early settlers.
