The Caroni Bird Sanctuary is a vast nature reserve on the western coast of Trinidad, encompassing the country's second-largest mangrove swamp system. Spanning approximately 5,611 hectares, it forms a complex ecosystem of navigable channels, lagoons, and mudflats. The sanctuary is world-renowned as the home of the Scarlet Ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago. Every evening at sunset, thousands of these brilliantly red birds return to their roosting sites in the mangroves, creating a spectacular natural display. In addition to the ibis, the area supports over 180 species of birds, as well as caimans, tree snakes, and anteaters. The mangrove forests play a crucial role in coastal protection and serve as a vital nursery for various fish and crustacean species. Boat tours through the intricate waterways allow visitors to experience the rich biodiversity from a close perspective. The site is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It remains one of the Caribbean's most significant ecological assets for research and conservation.
