Caroni Sugarcane Belt (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Caroni Sugarcane Belt represents the historical heart of Trinidad's sugar industry, which dominated the island's economy for centuries. This vast lowland area in the west was once covered in endless fields of sugarcane established by colonial powers. The history of the area is inextricably linked to the labor of enslaved Africans and later, indentured workers from India, who profoundly shaped the country's demographic landscape. The central hub was the Usine Ste. Madeleine, which at its peak was one of the largest sugar factories in the British Empire. Following the decline of global sugar prices, the state-owned Caroni (1975) Limited was officially closed in 2003, marking the end of an era. Today, the landscape is transitioning, with many former fields repurposed for diversified agriculture or housing developments. Nevertheless, the remnants of the old factories and the social fabric of the former plantation communities remain a vital part of Trinidadian cultural heritage.
