Cosigüina Volcano Fauna (Nicaragua)

Weather…

Reserva Natural Volcán Cosigüina is a significant protected area in the Chinandega Department, famous for the historic 1835 eruption of its volcano. The crater now houses a striking turquoise lake, but the reserve is equally renowned for its rich biodiversity and fauna. It serves as one of the last remaining habitats for the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) in the Pacific region of Nicaragua. The dense tropical dry forest provides refuge to spider monkeys, pumas, and numerous reptile species. Its strategic location on the Gulf of Fonseca makes it a critical stopover for migratory birds traveling through Central America. The reserve's ecosystems are vital for regional conservation efforts, maintaining a balance between the volcanic soil and the diverse wildlife that thrives on its slopes.

Best season
The dry season from November to April is well-suited for hiking to the volcano and observing howler monkeys. During these months, the weather is more stable and trails are easier to navigate.
🌅
Best time of day
Morning hours are best for hearing and seeing howler monkeys - their calls carry far. Plan your ascent early to take advantage of the cool temperatures and the most active animal period.
📜
Etiquette
Keep your distance from the monkeys and avoid making loud noises to prevent stressing them. Feeding is prohibited - animals must maintain their natural foraging behavior.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with good grip is required for the volcanic, sometimes rocky trails. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and binoculars for birdwatching.
🧭
Getting there
Access to the reserve is via the town of El Viejo, from where a dirt road leads to the parking area. A off-road vehicle is beneficial, especially in the rainy season.
