El Viejo is one of Nicaragua's most historic cities, located in the Chinandega Department in the northwestern part of the country. The city serves as a national religious hub, housing the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, which is the destination for the country's most important pilgrimage (La Lavada de la Plata). This basilica was built in the 17th century and is one of the most significant examples of colonial architecture in Central America. The city's economy is tightly linked to the sugar industry, with the massive plantations of the Ingenio San Antonio shaping the landscape. Geographically, the municipality extends to the Pacific coast and the Estero Real nature reserve. Local identity is deeply rooted in mestizo traditions, which are displayed through numerous religious and folkloric festivals. El Viejo also serves as the administrative center for a sprawling agricultural region that produces shrimp and bananas in addition to sugarcane.
