Bükk National Park (Hungary)

Weather…

The Bükk National Park was established in 1977 as Hungary's first national park located in a mountainous range. The heart of the park is the Bükk Plateau, a vast karst landscape at an average elevation of 800 meters, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and deep valleys. Geologically, the area is characterized by over 1,100 caves, including significant archaeological sites like the Istállós-kő Cave where prehistoric remains were found. The park's flora features rare orchids and Ice Age relics, while its dense forests are home to wildcats and various eagle species. Approximately 95 percent of the park is covered by forest, predominantly centuries-old beech trees from which the mountain range takes its name. For outdoor enthusiasts, the park has numerous educational trails and lookout points, such as Tar-kő, providing panoramic views. Protecting the karst water resources, which supply drinking water to the surrounding region, remains a key conservation mission.
