Lillafüred (Hungary)

Weather…

Lillafüred is a photogenic resort area located in the eastern part of the Bükk Mountains, administratively part of Miskolc. It was developed in the late 19th century as a luxury destination, named after Lilla Vay, the niece of Count András Bethlen. The centerpiece of the settlement is the Palace Hotel, an imposing Neo-Renaissance building constructed between 1927 and 1930, surrounded by hanging gardens and the artificial Lake Hámori. The area is famous for its natural wonders, including the Szinva waterfall, which is the highest in Hungary at 20 meters, and several unique caves such as the Anna Tufa Cave and the St. Stephen stalactite cave. The hanging gardens below the hotel offer thematic walking paths dedicated to poetry and nature, providing impressive views of the valley. Lillafüred is also a stop on the famous forest narrow-gauge railway, which connects the resort with the city of Miskolc through dense beech forests. Today, it remains one of Hungary's most romantic and popular tourist spots, offering activities ranging from boating to exploring unique geological formations.

⏱️
Time needed
A simple stroll around the lake and the waterfall can be comfortably completed in about one to two hours. However, if you plan to explore the caves, take a ride on the forest train, and enjoy a slow-paced lunch, it is easily a half-day or full-day excursion.
Combine with

🧭
Getting there
The resort area is readily accessible by a short car drive or regular public bus services running directly from the city center of Miskolc. For a more romantic or nostalgic approach, taking the historic narrow-gauge forest railway from the city up into the mountains is highly recommended.
💡
Insider tip
Bring sturdy, slip-resistant walking shoes if you intend to explore the caves or hike the nearby forest trails, as the paths can be damp and rocky. Also, note that the temperature inside the natural limestone caves remains quite cool throughout the entire year, so bringing a sweater is smart.
