Szerencs, often called the 'Gateway to Hegyalja,' is a historic town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County located at the edge of the world-famous Tokaj wine region. Its most significant monument is the Rákóczi Castle, a Renaissance fortress built in the late 16th century on the foundations of a former Benedictine abbey. During the 17th century, the castle served as a residence for Prince Sigismund Rákóczi and hosted pivotal political events, such as the National Assembly of 1605 where Stephen Bocskai was elected Prince of Hungary. The town is also renowned for its industrial heritage, specifically the sugar factory established in 1889 and the chocolate factory opened in 1923, which put Szerencs on the economic map. It houses one of Europe's few Sugar Museums and an extraordinary postcard collection containing over 900,000 items. Today, Szerencs serves as a cultural hub, hosting the National Chocolate Festival and acting as a starting point for tours into the heart of the Zemplén mountains.
