A fatal explosion occurred at the Mol petrochemical plant in Tiszaújváros in May 2026, claiming the life of one worker. Following the incident, which left several people with severe burns, a criminal investigation was launched into endangerment causing death.
The Orbán government provided a significant state subsidy to the Mol plant in Tiszaújváros to support ongoing developments within the complex. This investment facilitates the continuation of the large-scale technological modernization process started in previous years.
Tiszaújváros is a modern industrial town in northeastern Hungary, located at the confluence of the Sajó and Tisza rivers. It was established in the 1950s as a planned socialist industrial city, originally named Tiszaszederkény, then Leninváros between 1970 and 1991. The town is home to one of Hungary's most significant industrial hubs, centered around MOL Petrochemicals and a major thermal power plant. Despite its industrial focus, the town features a well-structured layout with extensive green spaces and parks. The Tiszaújváros Thermal Bath is a key tourist attraction, utilizing medicinal water with high iodine and bromine content discovered at a depth of 1,200 meters. The town has also gained an international reputation for its sports life, famously hosting the ITU Triathlon World Cup for many years. Its high-quality sports facilities and the nearby river Tisza provide excellent opportunities for both professional training and recreational water activities.
