Szalajka Valley

The Szalajka Valley, located near the village of Szilvásvárad, is one of the most famous and photogenic destinations within the Bükk Mountains. The valley was named after the production of sal ammoniac (potash), an industry that thrived here during the 19th century. Its most iconic natural attraction is the Fátyol Waterfall (Veil Waterfall), where the waters of the Szalajka Creek cascade down 17 meters over a series of natural travertine limestone steps. Numerous ponds along the valley floor are dedicated to trout farming, a local delicacy served in nearby restaurants. A historic narrow-gauge forest railway, originally built for logging, now transports tourists from the park entrance to the Gloriett clearing. At the end of the valley, a trail leads up to the Istállós-kő Cave, an important prehistoric site where evidence of human occupation dating back 30,000 years was found. Additionally, Szilvásvárad is home to a world-famous Lipizzaner stud farm, making it a key center for equestrian culture.
