Füzér Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Füzér Castle is one of Hungary's most visually remarkable medieval fortresses, perched atop a steep 552-meter volcanic cone in the Zemplen Mountains. It is among the few castles in the country believed to have existed before the Mongol invasion of 1241, dating back to the early 13th century. The castle holds a unique place in Hungarian history because, following the disastrous Battle of Mohács in 1526, the Holy Crown of Hungary was hidden here for nearly a year by Crown Guard Péter Perényi. Over the centuries, the stronghold was owned by influential noble families such as the Perényis and the Nádasdys. In recent years, the upper castle has undergone extensive and faithful reconstruction, including the magnificent late-Gothic chapel, the palace wing, and the bakery. The interiors are furnished with authentic period pieces, providing a vivid glimpse into medieval aristocratic life. From its high vantage point, the castle has wide-open views of the pristine Zemplen landscape. It stands today as a prime example of modern heritage conservation and historical reconstruction in Hungary.
