Jeannette Kawas National Park, formerly known as Punta Sal National Park, is located on the Caribbean coast west of Tela. Established in 1994, the park was later renamed in honor of environmental activist Jeannette Kawas, who fought for its protection and was tragically assassinated. The park spans approximately 781 square kilometers and features an extraordinary variety of ecosystems, including white sand beaches, coastal lagoons, mangrove forests, and tropical rainforests. The Punta Sal peninsula is famous for its rocky coves and coral reefs, which offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. Coastal lagoons, such as the Micos Lagoon, are home to manatees and crocodiles, while the forests are inhabited by howler monkeys and toucans. The park is also a vital stopover for migratory birds. This combination of marine and terrestrial habitats makes it one of the most valuable protected areas in Central America.

Getting there
The park is commonly accessed from the town of Tela by boat or through organized guided tours. As it is a coastal area, water transport is the most direct way to reach the lagoons and the beach forest areas.
Best season
The drier months from December to May are good for exploration, as the trails are more accessible during this time. Heavy rainfall during the wet season can make boat trips and forest hikes more challenging.
Terrain & paths
The terrain includes mangrove swamps, lagoons, and humid coastal forests with often sandy or muddy paths. Visitors should prepare for high humidity and sometimes uneven, natural trails throughout the park.
What to bring
Insect repellent and waterproof bags are essential for the boat trips and forest hikes. Sturdy footwear that can get dirty, as well as light, breathable clothing, are highly recommended for all visitors.
Parking
Visitors usually leave their vehicles in guarded parking lots in Tela or directly with their tour operator. Inside the national park, there are no regular roads or parking facilities for private cars.
Safety
It is important to carry enough drinking water and protect yourself from the strong tropical sun. In the mangroves and forests, watch for insects and local wildlife, and always stay on the established trails.
Time needed
You should plan a full day for a visit to adequately explore the various ecosystems and beaches. Most organized tours last about six to eight hours, including travel time to and from the national park area.
