Getting there
Getting to the mountainous region in the southwestern part of the country generally requires taking main highways before branching onto narrower mountain roads. Public transport may reach major towns, but private 4x4 vehicles are best for deeper exploration.
Best season
The optimal time for visiting is during the standard dry season, which affords clearer views and much safer driving conditions on mountain passes. Wet season visits can be hazardous due to frequent washouts and thick fog reducing visibility.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by a mix of forested slopes, rocky outcrops, and traditional agricultural land carved into the mountainsides. Trails can vary from well-trodden village paths to very steep and strenuous mountain hiking routes.
What to bring
Bring layered clothing to adapt to the cooler mountain air, alongside strong footwear suited for both muddy paths and rocky terrain. Carrying physical maps or downloaded GPS routes is highly recommended as trail markings are often non-existent.
