Marcala is a highland town in La Paz Department widely regarded as the capital of Honduran specialty coffee. It sits at about 1,300 m elevation in mountains shaped by the Sierra Opalaca, where the cool, often misty climate is well-suited for high-quality arabica coffee. Since 2005 Marcala has held an officially recognised denomination of origin ("Café Marcala"), a pioneering label in Central American coffee. Lenca identity is strongly present in the daily life of the town, visible in the language of tradition bearers, the festival calendar, pottery and the local market. The center is dominated by coffee roasters, cooperatives, cafés and small hotels that welcome travelers on the regional coffee route. Marcala stands symbolically behind the international rise of Lenca highland coffee as a recognised category.
