Polochic River Delta (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Polochic River Delta, known as the Bocas del Polochic Wildlife Refuge, is located in the Izabal department at the western mouth of the river where it empties into Lake Izabal. This vast wetland covers over 20,000 hectares and consists of a labyrinth of canals, lagoons, and seasonally flooded savannas. It is one of the most biodiverse areas in Guatemala and serves as a critical habitat for endangered species such as the West Indian manatee and the American crocodile. Ornitologically, the delta is of outstanding importance, acting as a stopover for over 250 species of migratory birds. The vegetation is dominated by reeds, water lilies, and dense swamp forests that filter the water and maintain the ecological balance of Lake Izabal. For local communities, the delta is a vital source of fish and water resources. Despite its remoteness, it is a destination for sustainable ecotourism, where visitors can explore the rich fauna, including howler monkeys and spectacled caimans, via boat tours.
